What You'll Need
- Your VIN: Usually visible through the windshield on the driver's side dashboard, or on a sticker inside the driver's door frame, or on your V5C logbook.
- Proof of ownership: V5C logbook (registered keeper document) is ideal. A photo ID plus a purchase invoice or insurance document showing you as the registered keeper also works. This is a legal and security requirement — any locksmith who doesn't verify ownership before cutting a key is not operating legitimately.
- Vehicle registration number: Helpful as a cross-reference.

Limitations to Be Aware Of
VIN-based key cutting works for the vast majority of vehicles, but there are some exceptions:
- Very old cars (pre-1990): Key codes may not be in electronic databases. We can often still cut a key by decoding the lock itself.
- Some imported vehicles: Grey imports or vehicles not originally sold in the UK may not have codes accessible through UK databases.
- Vehicles with replaced locks/ignitions: If a previous owner changed the locks, the VIN key code won't match the current locks. We can work around this by decoding the lock directly.
Do You Still Need to Programme the Key?
Cutting the key is only half the job for modern vehicles. If your car has a transponder chip, remote fob, or smart key (which is almost all cars built after 1995), the new key also needs to be programmed to your vehicle's immobiliser. Without programming, the key will turn in the lock but the engine won't start.
