Why 40-60% Less Than a Dealer?
Auto locksmiths aren't "cheaper because they're worse" — they're cheaper because the business model is different. Here's the real breakdown.
Mobile Auto Locksmith
- Comes to you — at home, at work, at the roadside, at a caravan park
- Cuts and programmes keys on-site, usually within the hour
- Lower overheads: one van, one technician, no showroom
- No commission to a national call centre — you talk to the person doing the work
- Fixed price quoted before we set off — no surprises
- Fully insured and uses professional-grade equipment
Main Dealer
- ✗You must bring the car to them — towing adds £100-£250+ if you have no keys
- ✗Often booked days or weeks ahead — not an emergency option
- ✗High overheads: showroom, sales staff, branded premises
- ✗Uses genuine OEM parts at full retail markup — same key, higher price
- ✗Labour rates of £100-£150+ per hour, plus diagnostic fees
- ✗Multiple visits sometimes required — key ordered, then programmed separately

What You'll Pay by Make
Different brands use different security systems. Here's what that means for your wallet. See our full vehicle makes pages for brand-specific details.
Ford
£99-£200One of the most common and cost-effective brands to replace. Older models use standard transponder keys.
Vauxhall
£99-£200Similar to Ford — straightforward on most models. Corsa and Astra keys are particularly quick.
Volkswagen
£150-£300VW uses more advanced immobiliser systems. Most post-2010 models need dealer-level diagnostic programming.
BMW
£200-£350Premium brand with proprietary security. Smart keys on newer models are the most expensive, but still 50%+ cheaper than a dealer.
Mercedes
£200-£350Similar to BMW — advanced security systems push costs up. 2013+ models typically use smart proximity keys.
Audi
£180-£320Shares technology with VW group. Post-2012 models use sophisticated immobiliser and keyless systems.
Toyota
£120-£250Generally reliable and cost-effective. Hybrid models (Prius, Auris) use smart keys from £180.
Land Rover
£250-£350One of the most expensive brands for replacement keys. Advanced security and keyless entry systems.
Nissan
£120-£220Mid-range costs. Qashqai and Juke keys are common and well-supported by aftermarket equipment.
Peugeot / Citroën
£120-£220French brands use shared technology. Most models from 2010 onward use remote fobs with transponder chips.
Hyundai / Kia
£120-£220Korean brands are increasingly common. Post-2015 models often have proximity smart keys.
Honda
£130-£250Reliable but Honda uses proprietary programming that requires specialist equipment.
What Affects the Price?
The final cost depends on more than just the key type.
Vehicle Age & Technology
A 2003 Ford Focus uses a basic transponder key (from £99). A 2023 BMW 5 Series uses a smart proximity key with rolling-code encryption (from £220). More technology = more cost.
Time of Day
A scheduled spare key job on a Tuesday afternoon costs less than an emergency call-out at 3am on a Saturday night. That's fair — but we always quote before we set off.
Your Location
Within our core East Yorkshire coverage area (Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough, Driffield, Hornsea, Beverley), there's no call-out fee. Further out, a small travel supplement may apply.
Do You Have an Existing Key?
Making a key from scratch (lost all keys, VIN-based cut) takes longer than copying an existing key. But we can do both on-site — no towing needed either way.
Key Type & Programming
Basic blade cutting is quick. Transponder programming adds time. Smart key programming is the most complex — requiring advanced diagnostic equipment and sometimes online security access.
Emergency vs Scheduled
If you're locked out at midnight, there's an emergency premium. But if you can wait until normal hours for a spare key, the cost is lower. Worth planning ahead.
Second Key — 50% Off
When you get a replacement key from Bridlington Keys, we'll do a second one for half price. Two keys for 1.5× the price of one. A spare key pays for itself the first time you need it — an emergency call-out for a single key is more expensive than having a spare ready.
Cost Guide FAQs
How much is a replacement car key in the UK in 2026?+
From a mobile auto locksmith: £99 for a standard metal key, £120-£150 for a transponder key, £150-£200 for a remote fob, and £180-£350 for a smart proximity key. Main dealers charge 40-60% more — typically £150-£800+ depending on the vehicle and key type.
Why are main dealers so much more expensive?+
Dealers have higher overheads (showrooms, sales staff, branded premises), charge higher labour rates (£100-£150+/hr), use OEM parts at full retail markup, and usually require you to tow the vehicle to them if you've lost all keys (adding £100-£250+). A mobile auto locksmith comes to you with lower overheads and the same key-cutting and programming equipment.
Is it cheaper to go to a locksmith or a dealer?+
A mobile auto locksmith is virtually always cheaper — typically 40-60% less. You also save the towing cost, get same-day service, and the work is done at your location. For most common UK cars, you'll pay £99-£200 from a locksmith vs £250-£800 from a dealer.
Do you charge a call-out fee?+
No — we don't charge call-out fees within our standard East Yorkshire coverage area (Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough, Driffield, Hornsea, Beverley, and surrounding areas). A small travel supplement may apply for outlying areas, but we'll always tell you before we set off.
What's the cheapest way to get a spare car key?+
Our 50% spare key offer: when you get a replacement key from us, the second one is half price. Two keys for 1.5× the price of one. This is significantly cheaper than waiting until you lose your only key and paying for an emergency call-out. Even if you never need the spare, the peace of mind is worth it.
Can I get a key made without the original?+
Yes. If you've lost all your keys, we can cut and programme a new one using your vehicle's VIN number. This is one of our most common services. You'll need proof of ownership (V5C logbook and photo ID). Most jobs are done within 45-60 minutes at your location.
