Step 1: Stop and Check Thoroughly (2 minutes)
Before you call anyone, do a proper search. It sounds obvious, but in a panic people often miss the obvious:
- Check all pockets, bags, and compartments — including jacket pockets you haven't worn, the bottom of a handbag, laptop bag, or shopping bags.
- Retrace your last movements — where did you last use them? The supermarket checkout? The café counter? The petrol station?
- Look around and under the car — keys sometimes drop on the ground next to the driver's door or fall under the seat.
- Ask nearby businesses — if you've been in a shop, café, or pub, ask if keys have been handed in. People are surprisingly honest.
- Check your car is actually unlocked — if you can open the door, the key might be inside (glove box, under a seat, in the ignition — it happens).
Step 2: Do You Have a Spare?
If you have a spare key at home, the cheapest option is to get someone to bring it to you. A taxi, a friend, or a family member. This is why we always recommend keeping at least one spare — it turns a crisis into an inconvenience.

Step 3: Get to a Safe Place
If you're on a roadside, move to a safe location behind a barrier if possible. In a car park, find shelter — especially if you have children or elderly passengers with you. In bad weather, a nearby café, shop, or your workplace is ideal. Stay with your vehicle if it's safe to do so, but your safety comes first.

Step 4: Call a Local Auto Locksmith
