Classic Car Keys
No Dealer Needed

Your classic doesn't need to visit a main dealer for a key. Pre-OBD, pre-CAN-bus, pre-smart-key — we cut and programme keys for classics the way they were designed to be made: with skill, not a computer ordering system.

Tibbe keys, early transponders, mechanical-only, resistor pellets. British Leyland, Ford, Vauxhall, Jaguar, Triumph, MG — from the 1950s to the modern classic era.

Key Types by Era

What key your classic takes depends on when it was built. Here's what to expect — and what it costs.

Pre-1980: Mechanical Only

£35-£55 per key

Pure mechanical keys — no electronics, no transponders, no immobilisers. A correctly cut key is all you need to open and start the car. These keys are cut on the same type of manual machine that locksmiths have used for decades.

Key typesSingle-sided and double-sided mechanical keys. Common blanks: Silca LF series, JMA universal blanks. Brass or steel.
How we do itThese are the simplest and cheapest keys to replace. If you have a working key, we can duplicate it. If all keys are lost, we can cut from the ignition barrel code or the door lock.
ExamplesMGB, Morris Minor, Triumph Spitfire, Austin Healey, VW Beetle (air-cooled), original Mini, Ford Anglia, Hillman Imp, Jaguar E-Type (early)

1980-1995: Transistorised Ignition

£35-£75 per key

The transition era. Ignition systems became electronic but there's usually no immobiliser chip in the key. The key itself is still mechanical, but the ignition system requires a correctly-coded resistor in some cases (early Vauxhall, some GM vehicles).

Key typesDouble-sided mechanical keys with optional resistor pellets. Some European makes introduced the first 'sidewinder' (laser-cut) keys. Tibbe keys appear on Fords from the mid-80s.
How we do itTibbe keys (Ford/Jaguar) need a specialist cutting machine — not every locksmith has one. We do. The Tibbe has 8 positions, each at 4 possible depths — that's 4⁸ = 65,536 possible combinations. Getting it right matters.
ExamplesFord Sierra / Escort / Fiesta (Tibbe), Vauxhall Cavalier / Astra, VW Golf Mk2, early BMW 3 Series (E30), Mercedes W124 (early), Volvo 240, Saab 900 (pre-GM)

1995-2005: Early Transponder

£80-£150 per key (cut + programmed)

Immobilisers become mandatory on new cars. The key now contains a small transponder chip — usually a glass capsule or a small black chip in the key head — that the ECU reads before it will allow the engine to start. This is the era where main dealers start quoting 3-figure sums for a key... but we can do it for significantly less.

Key typesRemote flip keys appear. Transponder chips: Philips Crypto (ID46), Texas Instruments (T5, T6), Megamos (ID48). Tibbe keys with integrated transponders (Jaguar XJ/XK).
How we do itProgramming these needs diagnostic equipment, not a dealer visit. We have the same tools the dealer uses. The transponder chip is separate from the remote locking — on many cars this era, the key starts the car but the remote fob is a separate unit.
ExamplesJaguar XJ/XK (X308/X100), BMW 3/5/7 Series (E46/E39/E38), Mercedes W202/W210, VW Golf Mk4, Audi A3/A4 (8L/B5), Saab 9-3/9-5 (OG), Volvo V70/S60 (P2), Toyota MR2 (Mk3), Mazda MX-5 (NB)

2005-2015: Modern Classic

£100-£200 per key (cut + programmed)

Fully integrated remote keys with transponder chips. The 'modern classic' era — cars old enough to feel characterful but new enough to have proper security. The key is a sealed remote unit; cutting and programming are both needed but well within our capability.

Key typesIntegrated remote flip keys, smart keys on premium models. CAN-bus programming via OBD port. Transponders: Philips Crypto 2 (ID46), Megamos AES (ID48), Texas Instruments DST+.
How we do itSome cars in this era have dealer-only programming on paper — in practice, we have the tools. The ECU needs to be put into 'key learning' mode via the OBD port. We can do that. The key blank itself is more expensive than earlier eras — that's the main reason for the higher price.
ExamplesFord Focus/Mondeo (Mk2), Vauxhall Astra/Insignia (Mk5), BMW 1/3 Series (E87/E90), Audi TT (Mk2), Porsche Boxster/Cayman (987), Land Rover Discovery 3, Range Rover Sport (L320), Mini (R56)

How We Make a Classic Car Key

The process — whether you have a working key to copy from, or they're all lost.

Find the Key Code

For mechanical-only keys, the key code is usually stamped on the ignition barrel or door lock. We remove the barrel (carefully — no damage to 40-year-old trim) and read the code. Alternatively, the code is in the owner's handbook, on a key code card, or derivable from the VIN on later cars.

Cut the Key Blank

We stock blanks for most British, European, and Japanese classics. The key is cut on a manual or electronic cutting machine depending on the key type. Tibbe keys need a specialist Tibbe machine — we have one. Laser-cut sidewinder keys need the electronic machine — we have that too.

Programme the Transponder (If Needed)

For 1995+ cars with immobilisers, we programme the transponder chip to the ECU. This means powering up the car's electronics, connecting to the diagnostic port (the round 16-pin OBD2 connector, or the proprietary round connector on pre-2001 cars), and adding the new key to the ECU's authorised key list.

Test Everything

Key turns in the ignition, engine starts, remote locking works, door lock turns. We test it all before we leave. 12-month warranty on every key we make.

We love a challenge

Got a Tibbe Key?

The Tibbe key — that distinctive figure-8 profile used on Fords and Jaguars from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s — needs a specialist cutting machine. Not every locksmith has one. We do. If you've been told "we can't do Tibbe keys", you've been talking to the wrong people. Ford Sierra, Escort, Fiesta, Granada, Scorpio, Ka, early Focus... Jaguar XJ (X300/X308), XK, S-Type... we can cut them.
